After the Malaysia Masters 2023, the BWF world shifts its attention to yet another Super 500 event, the Thailand Open 2023. The Thailand Open in badminton is an open international championship held in Thailand since 1984. It was halted in 1986, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2021. India had four different winners in the competition’s history. Saina Nehwal won the women’s singles title in 2012, Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth won the men’s singles titles in 2013 and 2017, respectively, and the men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the title in 2019. 2023 has been one of the most competitive seasons, especially in the men’s singles category, with HS Prannoy being the latest entrant into the list of players to have won a title in the year. No player has won more than one title in men’s singles in the BWF World Tour in 2023.

Heading into the Day 3 of the Thailand Open will see the beginning of the Round of 16. The doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty stormed into the Round of 16 after a hard-fought win over the Danish pair of R. Kjær and F. Søgaard. One of the mouthwatering clashes of the round of 16 will be between 23-year-old Ashmita Chaliha and the sixth-seeded Carolina Marin. Another upset of the tournament was when Indian youngster Kiran George defeated world rank 9 Shi Yu Qi of China in the round of 32 on Wednesday. The 22-year-old played some brilliant badminton across two sets to defeat the Chinese shuttler 21-18, 22-20. Kiran will now face Weng Hong Yang of China who defeated Kidambi Srikanth earlier. The other important matches of the round of 16 are Lakshya Sen vs Li Shi Feng and Saina Nehwal vs He Bingjao.
