India’s campaign at the Thailand Masters Badminton championship came to an end after Sai Praneeth’s men’s singles quarter-final loss to China’s Li Shi Feng on Friday. The 30-year-old former World Championship bronze medalist lost the match with a scoreline of 17-21, 23-21, 18-21 in an hour and 23 minutes. Sai, who secured a thrilling victory over Korea’s Jeon Hyeok in the previous round, was the lone Indian shuttler to reach the last-8 stage of the BWF Super 300 tournament. Praneeth, who has been struggling for fitness in the last year, didn’t make a good start to the match, going down 1-4, but soon jumped to a 11-7 lead at the break. However, after the interval, the Chinese shuttler started dominating the rallies to narrow the gap at 15-14. The World no. 23 pocketed five straight points to move ahead and sealed the first game comfortably.

In the second game, The Indian once again fought back from 3-6 ro level the score at 9-9 but then Li raced to a 16-10 advantage. The Indian was not willing to give up easily and slowly clawed his way back and then went on to force the match into decider. Meanwhile, the third game was also no different as Li jumped to a six point lead at 18-12, but Praneeth again showed great character to bring it down to 18-19 before a backhand return to net handed two match points to the Chinese, who sealed it with a smash.
