Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu overcame a strong challenge from her Chinese opponent Han Yue to advance into the semi-finals in the women’s singles of the Singapore Open 2022 Super Series 500 badminton tournament. Meanwhile Sindhu’s compatriot’s Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy suffered heartbreaking defeats in their respective quarter-final matches in the tournament on Friday. Third Seed Sindhu lost the first game 17-21, but quickly got her acts together to win the second 21-11. And then, the 26-year-old Indian used all her experience and staged a brilliant fightback to win the third game 21-19 and enter the last-four stage.

Sindhu will next face unseeded Saena Kawakami, the Japanese world number 38, who defeated sixth seeded Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand 21-17, 21-19. London Olympics bronze medalist Sain, on the other hand, squandered a game lead to go down 13-21-21-15, 20-21 against the Japanese shuttler Aya Ohori. In the men’s section, world number 19, Prannoy also bowed out after giving a tough fight to Japan’s Kodai Naraoka. The 29-year-old won the first game 21-12 before losing the next two games 14-21, 18-21 to bow out of the contest.
The 2022 Singapore Open will commence on June 12 and end on July 17.
