Japan’s Kento Momota produced a dominant performance on Saturday to beat Thailand’s Kunlavut and reach the Malaysia Open final. It would be the 27-year-old’s first final of the year after enduring a recent run of poor form, and surviving a car crash over two years ago. In Kuala Lumpur, Momota wasted no time in imposing himself on the Thai shuttler, who struggled to cope with Momota’s quality. He needed just 42 minutes to beat Kunlavut with a scoreline of 21-11, 21-12. He is now on the brink of his first Malaysia Open title with only Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen standing in his way.

Axelsen, on the other hand, was forced to play three sets for the third time in the tournament before getting the better of Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 21-15, 20-22, 21-11 in 62 minutes.  The Dane, who was forced to three games by Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong in the second round and Anthony Ginting of Indonesia in the last eight on Friday, will be contesting in his third successive final on sunday. The head-to-head record is in favour of the Japanese which stands at 14-2 but all victories were achieved before the accident in 2020.
