India’s PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy secured contrasting victories to enter the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open Super 750 badminton tournament on Thursday. Two-time Olympic medalist, Sindhu came from behind to beat Thailand’s Phittayaporn Chaiwan 19-21, 21-9, 21-14. Meanwhile Thomas Cup star Prannoy secured a dominant 21-15, 21-7 win over world no.4 Chou Tien in 35 minutes. Sindhu seeded seventh will face her nemesis Tai Tzu of Chinese Taipei, against whom she has an inferior 5-15 head-to-head record including a string of five losses on the trot. Prannoy, on the other hand, will face Jonatan Christie for a place in the semi-finals.

Sindhu started slowly against the Thai opponent as she lost the opening set. However the 26-year-old quickly adapted to the situation and took a more aggressive approach to win the second with a breeze. In the third game, the 21-year-old Thai shuttler showed some fight and held the Indian 10-10, before she displayed the best rally of the match to take it 11-10 at interval. Sindhu then went on to pocket the third set and thereby sealed the match. Prannoy took some time to get his acts together in the first set, but once he found his mojo, there was no looking back. The 29-year-old Indian slammed 12 points on the trot in the second set to secure his second win over chen.
