Top Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth went down in straight games to Olympic and world champion Viktor Axelsen in his opening men’s singles match at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open Super 750 tournament here on Wednesday. The 2015 champion lost the match with a scoreline of 14-21, 19-21 in just 41 minutes at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi. It was a second successive first-round exit for the 29-year-old after he lost to Kento Nishimoto of Japan in the first round of the Malaysia Open last week. Meanwhile, Axelsen is in stunning form, having won the last three tournaments he has participated in and that includes a Malaysia Open triumph last Sunday.

The Danish star, who has won the India open twice, is the favourite to win the super 750 tournament. After conceding the first set quite easily, Srikanth came out all guns blazing in the second, and took a 14-5 lead. However, Axelsen got back his bearings at the nick of time with the Indian committing a series of errors to allow his opponents to bring the equation down to 13-15. The Dane grabbed two match points and then produced a precise return on the front court to seal the second game and the match. He will take on China’s Shi Yuqi in the quarter-final match on Thursday.
