Defending champions India stormed into the final of the badminton mixed team event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by defeating Singapore 3-0 on Monday. The men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairajranki Reddy and Chirag Shetty started the proceedings with a dominant 21-11, 21-12 win over Yong Kai Terry Hee and Andu Jun Kian Kwek. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu doubled the lead with another thumping victory over 19th-ranked Jia Min Teo. The women’s singles match scoreline read 21-11, 21-12. The third match between Lakshya Sen and Loh was the most anticipated rubber of the semi-final with the 10th-ranked Indian taking on the 9th-ranked Singaporean.

Although it was Loh who took an early lead of 4-0, the Indian quickly bounced back to level the score at 6-6. And then, Sen went into the break with a slender 11-10 lead. Courtesy of two unforced errors from Loh’s racket, the Indian extended his lead to 14-10, he followed up with a powerful smash on Loh’s forehand and made the score 16-10. The 20-year-old Indian went on to win the first game 21-18. The second game was also a tight affair as Sen went into the break with yet another 11-10 lead, before extending the lead to 17-13 with a powerful smash. Sen went on to pocket the second game and thereby the match with a scoreline of 21,18, 21-15. India will take on Malaysia in the gold medal match on Tuesday, while Singapore will play England for the bronze.
