Defending champions India stormed through to the quarter-finals of the badminton mixed team event at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Saturday. India will take on South Africa in the last-8 stage on Sunday night. Team India began their title defence with a rampaging 5-0 win over Pakistan in their Group A opener before thrashing Sri Lanka 5-0 to book their place in the knockout stage. And then, India got the better of Australia 4-1 in their final group match of the competition to go through with a 100% record. 

Former men’s singles world number one Kidambi Srikanth started India’s fixture against Australia with a dominant 21-14, 21-13 victory, handing India a 1-0 lead. The two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu doubled India’s lead as she defeated Chen Wendy Hsuan-Yu 21-10, 21-12. India men’s duo of Sumeeth Reddy and Chirag Shetty were up next. The India pair defeated Tran Hoang Pham and Jack Yu 21-16, 21-19 to give India an unassailable 3-0 lead. In the fourth match, with the win already secured, India suffered its first defeat in this edition of the competition as the Australian women’s duo of Hsuan-Yu Wendy and Gronya Somerville got the better of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly 21-13, 21-19. India then finished off the day by winning the last match of the tie, with Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponappa beating Ying Xiang Lin and Gronya Somerville 21-14, 21-11.
