India’s star shuttler PV Sindhu will not be taking part in the event because of a stress fracture she sustained during her Commonwealth Games triumph few weeks ago.
The prestigious BWF World Championship is set to begin from August 22 in Tokyo, Japan. For the first time since the global pandemic, most of the biggest names in badminton will be on court in the same competition. Viktor Axelsen and Carolin Mari are out to reclaim the crown. Meanwhile India’s star shuttler PV Sindhu will not be taking part in the event. The 27-year-old, who won the Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham a few weeks ago, is nursing a stress fracture. Therefore all eyes will be on 20-year-old Lakshya Sen to lead India’s charge at the world championship. Sen and Kidambi Srikanth had finished on the podium in the last edition of the competition as they won the bronze and silver medals respectively.

Veteran shuttler Saina Nehwal, who had won the two medals in the prestigious event will take on former world champion Nozomi Okuhara as early as the second round. B Sai Praneet, who won a bronze medal in 2019 is the only Indian in the top half. Meanwhile HS Prannoy, who played a vital role in India Thomas Cup triumph earlier this year is in the bottom half alongside Srikanth and Sen. Prannoy will be hungry to make his presence felt in Tokyo after missing the CWG in Birmingham.
The 2022 BWF world Championship will commence on August 22 and end on August 28.
