Badminton was first introduced as an exhibition sport at the Asian Games during the 1958 edition in Tokyo. It was later incorporated as a standard sport in the games four years later, in 1962. In its initial competitive year, the sport featured six categories – singles and doubles competitions for both genders, as well as team events for both men and women.

The mixed doubles category made its inaugural appearance in the Asian Games 1966. During the 1962 competition, the bronze medal was awarded after a tiebreaker between the losers of the two semi-final matches. However, from the year 1966 onwards, the event adopted a dual bronze medal system for each category, with the exception of the 1974 games.

In the Asian Games badminton tournaments, a knockout format is followed. The matches consist of the best of three games, with each game played up to 21 points. The scoring system operates on a rally basis, allowing points to be scored irrespective of which player is serving. A game is won either by a two-point lead or by being the first to reach 30 points.

China is the most dominant nation in the history of the Badminton at the Asian Games, having claimed 107 medals, out of which 43 are gold, 29 are silver, and 35 are bronze medals. With an overall medal tally of 99 and 66, Indonesia and South Korea are the second and third best-nations in the history of the Asian Games.
