The Grand Prix Badminton League (GPBL) is a badminton league which is officially licensed and supported by the Karnataka Badminton Association. The first edition of the league took place from Aug 12 to Aug 21, 2022, which saw KGF Wolves winning the title. The Season 2 or the 2023 edition has been launched with a bang and will see the participation of top badminton stars like national champion Mithun Manjunath, Shin Baek Cheol, and Sai Praneeth.

Some of the elite sports figures and dignitaries attended the launch ceremony held in Bengaluru. Badminton legend Prakash Padukone graced the occasion with his presence. Besides him, N Manjunatha Prasad, the Principal Secretary of the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports for the Government of Karnataka, marked his presence in the important event. Other important figures who were present were Prashanth Reddy, the league commissioner, and CEO of Bitsport, P Devaraj, who is the commissioner of GST, and the league Director, Arvind Bhat.

When is the Season 2 of Grand Prix Badminton League taking place?

After the huge success of its inaugural season, Season 2 of the Grand Prix Badminton League is scheduled to take place from August 27 to September 9. The league is all set to feature top-tier badminton action featuring both national and international stars.

What is the location of the Grand Prix Badminton League 2023?

The eagerly awaited second season of GPBL is taking place in Bengaluru, India. 

Which are the teams taking part in the competition?

The competition will have eight teams, who will battle it out for the GPBL title. The teams include:

  • Bengaluru Tigers
  • Hyderabad Hounds
  • Chennai Superstarz
  • Gujarat Lions
  • Kerala Tuskers
  • Mumbai Wolves
  • Pune Panthers
  • Northeast Rhinos

Each team consists of 10 players, consisting of a mix of local and international talent, with at least two female players on each team.

What is the competition format?

The competition format for GPBL has been designed to maximize excitement and engagement for players, spectators, and viewers. Each tie comprises five matches: (1) Men’s singles, (2) Women’s singles, (3) Men’s doubles, (4) Mixed doubles, and (5) Super Match.  The matches will be played over three sets of 11 points each, except the Super Match, which will have a unique structure. A trump match has also been introduced, providing the opportunity for double points if won but risking a negative point if lost.

How many players will be participating in the event?

GPBL Season 2 has witnessed a great response from players who are excited to participate in the event. A total of 457 players, including 54 international stars, registered for the Players’ Auction Roster. From this pool, 150 players have been shortlisted.

What is the total prize money that the competition will be offering?

The team owners have made a decision to reduce the original prize money from Rs 1 crore to Rs 60 lakh. The remaining Rs 40 lakh will be contributed to the players’ pool, thus increasing it to Rs 35 lakh per team.
