China’s Shi Yuqi cruised into the second round of Australian Open Badminton tournament in the men’s singles category after beating Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan 21-11, 21-18 on Wednesday. Shi will next face countryman Weng Hongyang , who got the better of New Zealand’s Rickky Cheng 21-11, 21-16 in the first round of the BWF Tour Super 300 event. The 14-year-old, who is ranked 8th among junior players, had a standout season so far, winning four junior BWF championships and making it to the final of two tournaments as per the Olympic website. Lu Guangzu defeated Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto 21-18, 21-17 and will take on top-seeded Malaysian shuttler Lee Zii Jia in the second round. In the women’s singles opening round, Han Yue, who claimed the Hylo Open title earlier this month, secured a 9-21, 22-20, 21-5 victory over South Korea’s Kim Ga.
