Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi is the current Olympic champion (2020 Summer Olympics) as well as the 2016 World indoor winner. He became the first Italian to ever win the Diamond League championship in 2021, and he followed that up in 2022. His father, Marco Tamberi, who in 1983 set the indoor Italian record with a height of 2.28 m, is Gianmarco’s coach. Tamberi broke the Italian high jump record twice in 2015. It was once in Cologne with a jump of 2.34 metres and again in Eberstadt, where he finished second to Derek Drouin. He later placed eighth with a clearance of 2.25 m at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.

Tamberi triumphed in each competition he entered during the winter of 2016. He set a new Italian indoor record while winning at Banska Bystrica with 2.35 m, which Marco Fassinotti matched in the same competition. After clearing 2.33 m, he prevailed in Trinec. With a leap of 2.36 metres, he captured the gold medal at the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland.

Due to an injury sustained earlier in the season, Tamberi was unable to participate in the 2016 Olympics. He is renowned for growing a full beard during qualifying for major tournaments and shaving off half of it for the final. Tamberi and Mutaz Essa Barshim are competitors from Qatar clearing 2.37 metres. They tied for first place in the men’s high jump event at the 2020 Summer Olympics on August 1, 2021. In one of the few times in Olympic history when athletes from different nations decided to share the same medal, Tamberi and Barshim both agreed to share the gold medal.
