Greek javelin thrower Elina Tzengko was born on September 2, 2002. She became the youngest Greek and javelin European champion when she won the gold medal at the 2022 European Athletics Championships. Elina Tzengko was raised in Nea Kallikrateia, Chalkidiki, and was born to immigrants from Albania. Her older sisters are two. Around the age of seven, she began throwing little balls for exercise. Tzengko participated in the European Athletics Under-18 Championships in Hungary in 2018 and finished in seventh position. She won the gold medal in the Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October with throws of 63.34 metres and 61.74 metres. Thus, she was also named European Athletics’ top female athlete of the month.
Tzengko achieved the world U18 best of 65.90 metres (javelin, 500 grammes) the following May at the Panhellenic School Championships in Ioannina. The 17-year-old set the global U20 record with a throw of 63.96 metres on August 1 in the Greek U20 Championships. World Athletics refused to recognize it as a record because, as required by anti-doping standards, a drug control wasn’t conducted.
