The 2023 World Athletics Indoor Tour ended with a bang last weekend in Birmingham, as athletes competed for their chance to qualify for the upcoming World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow. The tour saw top athletes from around the world compete in various events, with the final Gold level meeting serving as the last chance for athletes to earn qualification. In total, 11 athletes secured their spots at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, which will take place one year from now in Glasgow. These wild card spots will allow for certain national teams to have a third team member in certain disciplines, giving them a potential advantage in the competition.

Typically, team selection for the World Indoor Championships is limited to two athletes per nation per discipline. However, with the wild card spots, a third athlete can now compete for their country. It will ultimately be up to each athlete’s national federation to decide whether or not to enter them into the World Indoor Championships. Aside from the opportunity to compete in Glasgow, each of the 2023 World Indoor Tour series winners also received a bonus of US$10,000. This was a major incentive for athletes to perform their best throughout the tour and secure their spot at the Championships. With the Championships just one year away, fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the chance to see these top athletes compete on the global stage.

About the Glasgow Games

Glasgow has been chosen to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024, following its successful hosting of the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2019. The championships will take place at the same arena, which can hold up to 5,000 fans for each of the six sessions. To mark the event, a Scottish design agency Brand Oath has developed a new brand mark. This incorporates Scotland’s national emblem, the thistle, into the World Athletics brand outline. The emblem features a diamond tartan pattern that reflects the arena’s architecture, with the flower head represented by the running track lanes. The brand mark is underpinned by the classic victory pose with arms aloft, symbolizing the spirit of sportsmanship. The Glasgow life, on behalf of Glasgow City Council, in partnership with the Scottish Government, Event Scotland, UK Sport, and UK Athletics, will deliver the championships.
