Olympic Games are regarded as the grandest multi-sport event in the world. The previous edition of the games was conducted successfully from July 23 to August 8, 2022, in Tokyo, Japan. On September 7, 2013, Tokyo was chosen as the host city for the Summer Olympics 2020 at the 125th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Olympic Games were initially slated to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, but on 24 March 2020, the event was postponed until 2021 because of the global COVID-19 epidemic, marking the first time in the event’s history as no other edition were rescheduled before. For marketing purposes, the event used the Tokyo 2020 branding. The event took place behind closed doors with no public spectators allowed, making it the first and only Olympic Games without official spectators. We now take a look at the countries which are confirmed/likely to host the upcoming edition of the Summer Olympics.

Olympics – 2024, Host – Paris, France (Confirmed)

On September 13, 2017, Paris was handed to host the Summer Olympics 2024 Games at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) adopted a procedure to jointly award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to the two cities as a result of numerous withdrawals that reduced the field to Paris and Los Angeles. Paris, which has already hosted in 1900 and 1924, will follow London as the second city to hold the Summer Olympics three times (1908, 1948 and 2012). The Paris Games in 2024 will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Paris Games in 1924.

Olympics – 2028, Host – Los Angeles, California, The USA (Confirmed)

Los Angeles was declared to host the 2028 edition of the Games at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru after multiple withdrawals from other National Olympic Committees (NOCs). The United States will host them for the fifth time in the Summer and for the ninth time altogether. After London and Paris, Los Angeles will become the third city to host the Summer Olympics three times, having done so in 1932 and 1984. It will also be the first city in North America to do this.

Olympics – 2032, Host – Brisbane, Australia (Confirmed)

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) chose and declared Brisbane as the successful bid on July 21, 2021, just two days before the commencement of the 2020 Summer Olympics following modifications to the bidding regulations. Brisbane was announced as the preferred bid on February 24, 2021 and received formal approval from the IOC Executive Board on June 10, 2021. Through the revised bid process, Brisbane was chosen as the first host city to hold the Olympics. After the Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Victoria in 1956 and the Summer Olympics in Sydney, New South Wales in 2000, this will be the third Summer Games to be staged in Australia.

Olympics – 2036, Host – Mexico (Likely)

Mexico has formally applied to host the Summer Olympic Games for the second time in 2036. Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard and Mexican Olympic Committee President Mara José Alcalá Izguerra stated that Mexico will bid to host the Games in the previous year but would instead aim for 2040 if unsuccessful. The probable host city was not named by the foreign minister, but Mexico City, which hosted the Olympics for the first time in Latin America in 1968, would seem to be the most likely option.
