After months of hogging the limelight in Indian athletics, athlete Jyothi Yarraji who specializes in the 100m hurdles has finally managed to grab her first International gold medal in a major event. She did so by winning the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 which is currently happening in Bangkok, Thailand. She bagged the top spot in the women’s 100m hurdles despite unfavorable weather conditions.

The heavy rainfall seemed to slow her down, resulting in a time of 13.09 seconds, slightly above her usual sub-13 seconds performance. Jyothi Yarraji had clocked a faster time of 12.98 seconds in the preliminary heats, which was also her sixth sub-13 run in the current year. This victory not only helped India in bagging their first gold medal in the 25th edition of the championship, but also the first-ever gold for the nation in the 100m hurdles category in the history of the Asian Athletics Championships.

Born on August 28, 1999, Jyothi is a native of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and is the child of Suryanarayana and Kumari. Jyothi’s early years were affected by modest circumstances, with her father working as a security guard and her mother providing domestic services. According to Olympics.com, their monthly earnings were around Rs 18,000, which sustained the family’s needs. Jyothi’s academic journey started at Port High School Krishna in Vizag, where her unique height caught the attention of a physical education instructor. The teacher could see a lot of potential in her becoming a world-class hurdler in the future.

Finally, the day came when  she shattered the 20-year-old national record of Anuradha Biswal set in 2002 when she ran 13.23s on 10 May 2022. She has since then broken the national record on multiple occasions, and presently holds the record with a timing of 12.82s.
