Twitter reacts to Somalian runner's 100m Race which she ran in an unusual 21.81s

The 20-year-old from Somalia, Nasra Abukar Ali, became talk of the town after finishing last in the women’s 100m race at the FISU World University Games 2021. She ran a slow-paced 100m with a timing of 21.81 seconds which is considered as one of the rare sights in this event. This timing of the Somalian athlete was much slower than the winner’s who clocked a 11.58s. 

Within no time, the video of the 100m race of the Somalian runner went viral on social media and received a lot of response worldwide. Nasra Abukar‘s performance in the race led to an online storm of mockery and disbelief, with some netizens citing it as an indicator of the Somali government’s corruption and inefficiency. What was the response of the Somalia’s Sports Ministry?

In response to the controversy, the Sports Minister, Mohamed Barre Mohamud, stated that an inquiry conducted in collaboration with Somalia’s National Olympic Committee revealed that Ali did not have a background in sports or running. Owing to this incident, Somalia’s sports minister Mohamed Barre Mohamud has suspended the athletics chief.

In a statement, the minister stated, “Khadijo Aden Dahir, the Chairwoman of the Somali Athletics Federation, has engaged in acts of abuse of power, nepotism, and defaming the name of the nation in (the) international arena.” “Based on these findings, the Chairman of the Somalia National Olympics committee should suspend Khadijo Aden. “Furthermore, the Ministry… firmly declares its intention to pursue legal action against both the Chairman of the Athletics Federation of Somalia and individuals responsible for the falsification of the Somali University Sports Association.”
