After falling back due to an early injury, Dutch racer and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics gold medalist in 10000 and 5000m, Sifan Hassan, accomplished an amazing debut at the London Marathon 2023 by winning the marathon. According to the event’s organizers, the elite women’s field was the finest ever race in the history of the event. Hassan defeated both Tokyo Olympics marathon winner Peres Jepchirchir and reigning champion Yelamzerf Yehualaw to claim the title.

With little over six kilometers remaining, the middle-distance runner Sifan Hassan caught up to the leading group despite experiencing pain in her hip flexor. The 30-year-old finished in 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 34 seconds after sprinting fiercely over the final 500 meters. Peres Jepchirchir of the Kenya placed third in the 2023 edition of the London Marathon, while the last year’s champion Yehualaw finished fifth.

What happened in the men’s marathon event?

During the men’s elite race at the London Marathon 2023, Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum set a new Games record, finishing in an astounding 2 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds. Kiptum, who holds the record for the quickest debut marathon from Valencia, surged ahead at the 19-mile mark, ultimately securing the second-fastest marathon time in history. The 23-year-old victor was completely drained as he collapsed upon completing the race with an impressive time of 2:01:25. The timing was just 16 seconds outside the world record. The world record is presently held by Eliud Kipchoge who established it last year in the Berlin Marathon 2022 with a timing of 2:01:09 secs.

Home favorite Mo Farah came in ninth with a timing of 2:10:28 secs, which was also said to be his last London Marathon. The gold medalist of the London Olympics 2012 and Rio Olympics 2016 in the 5000m and 10000m disciplines, Mo Farah, is one of the greatest athletes Great Britain has ever produced. Another Great Britain runner Emile Cairess finished sixth, clocking a time of 2:08:07 to become the best British athlete of the 2023 edition.
