Andre De Grasse, the reigning Olympic champion, showcased his talent when it mattered the most, by claiming his second national 200m title at the Canadian Track and Field Championships 2023. The sprinter was racing against the clock and vying for a spot in the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest before the qualification deadline closed on the same day. After falling short in his attempt to qualify through the men’s 100m final at the championships, the 28-year-old De Grasse had one final shot left.

De Grasse rose to the occasion and claimed his fifth national title by clocking a season-best time of 20.01 seconds. He crossed the finish line ahead of Aaron Brown and Brendon Rodney, who recorded times of 20.10 seconds and 20.15 seconds, respectively. De Grasse’s last triumph in the half-lap sprint event at the national championships came six years before, in 2017. Despite De Grasse’s stellar performance in the 200m, Brown concluded the championships as the top sprinter, bagging his fifth consecutive national title with a time of 10.08 seconds.

De Grasse narrowly missed the cut for the 100m final, clocking in at 10.21 seconds and finishing in ninth place overall. His ability to rise to the challenge is further evidenced by his collection of five world championships and six Olympic medals, including his remarkable victory in the 200m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021). Since his bronze medal win in the 100m at Beijing in 2015, De Grasse has secured a sprint medal at every world championship he participated in, with the exception of 2017 when an injury sidelined him.

Andre De Grasse is the most decorated male athlete for Canada in the history of the summer Olympics, having achieved podium finishes in all three sprint events – 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m relay – at both the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games. However, he has yet to fully demonstrate his potential this season, failing to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m or the 20-second mark in the half-lap sprint event. He secured third place in the 100m at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava, and sixth in the 200m at the Lausanne Diamond League at the end of June, before a groin injury compelled him to miss the Bauhaus-Galan in Stockholm.
