The two-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon delivered an astounding performance at the Monaco Diamond League 2023, shattering the world record in the women’s mile event. Kipyegon, 29, set a new record of 4:07.64 and outpaced the previous mark set by Sifan Hassan in 2019 by nearly five seconds. The following second and third spots were secured by Ciara Mageean, clocking in a personal and national best of 4:14.58, and Freweyni Hailu, with a time of 4:14.79.

A distinguished figure in the athletic world with two Olympic and world 1500m championships to her name, Faith Kipyegon has been setting the stage on fire with world records in the 1500m and 5000m events this year. Laura Muir, the Scottish athlete who won silver in the women’s 1500 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, achieved fourth place with a new British record of 4:15.24. Melissa Courtney-Bryant shattered the previous British record and established a new Welsh record of 4:16.38, finishing seventh.

What Kipyegon said in the interview

“I really enjoyed the race. I came for that, I wanted to chase the world record,” shared an elated Kipyegon. She also added, “What will be the next – I do not know… I do not know how I am doing this because it just keeps going really in a good way.”

Faith Kipyegon‘s record-setting spree in 2023 has been a pleasant surprise for her, as her initial focus was primarily on breaking the 1500m world record. The Kenyan champion, who broke the 1500m world record in Florence on June 2, followed by the 5000m record in Paris a week later, revealed, “I want to defend my world title at 1500m in Hungary but I am going to double also with 5,000m in Budapest.”

Other prominent performances

Another memorable performance was delivered by Olympic champion Karsten Warholm of Norway, who posted the fourth-fastest time ever in the men’s 400m hurdles, clocking in at 46.51 seconds. In contrast, Armand Duplantis, the Swedish 2020 Olympic gold medalist and pole vault world record holder, had a disappointing day, finishing fourth after not clearing 5.92m, the winning height set by American Christopher Nilsen.

Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson claimed victory in the 200m event with a time of 21.86, while Britain’s former world champion Dina Asher-Smith delivered a season-best performance, finishing third with a time of 22.23. Athletes will now gear up for the next Diamond League event in London, as they start their progress towards the World Championships in Budapest scheduled for 19-27 August.
