From August 19 to August 27, 2023, top athletics stars from all over the world will gather at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre for the World Athletics Championships 2023. The championship promises high-octane athletic showdowns where the reigning Olympic and World titleholders will aim to mark a significant impact. With just a few days to go for the event, let’s take a look at some of the top athletes who have pulled out of the World Athletics Championships 2023, owing to injuries/ other significant reasons.

Sydney McLauglin (Women’s 400m Hurdles)

Reigning Olympic and world champion in the 400m hurdles, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, has stepped back from the upcoming World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest. This move comes in light of a knee ailment that requires her immediate attention. Focusing on her long-term performance, McLaughlin-Levrone believed it was essential to address her minor knee concern, ahead of the Paris Olympics2024.

McLaughlin stunned the world when she set a new world record in the 400m hurdles with a staggering 50.68s finish. She achieved the feat at the World Athletics Championships 2022. She showcased her prowess in the 400m race during the U.S. Athletics Championships trials earlier in July in Eugene, with a timing of 48.74 seconds.

Michael Norman (Men’s 400m)

Michael Norman will not be defending his men’s 400 meters at the World Athletics Championships 2023. Last year, Norman took the world by storm with a stunning victory at the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Eugene. However, 2023 didn’t turn out to be a good year for Norman. He faced injuries, changed coaches to switch to shorter sprint which again didn’t work well for him. As a result, Norman decided to momentarily step back from the track scene and focus on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Grant Fisher (Men’s 5000m and 10000m)

Grant Fisher, the American record holder in the 3000m, 5000m, and 10,000m races, withdrew from the 5000m final at the USATF Championships. Fisher cited a femur stress injury as the reason for his sudden exit. While running the 10,000m, Fisher seemed poised to clinch another U.S. title. However, as the competition intensified, he struggled to maintain his lead. During the concluding lap, he lost his momentum which caused him to slide to the fourth position.
