The 19th World Athletics Championships are set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 19 to 27 August 2023. This will mark Hungary’s debut as a host of this prestigious event. Although Budapest expressed interest in hosting the 2007 edition, the city withdrew its bid, and the event was later held in Osaka.

India’s 28-athlete delegation to this year’s competition will be led by Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. Chopra achieved a historic silver in men’s javelin throw at the previous World Athletics Championships 2022 in Oregon. This ended India’s 19-year medal drought in the event. Other notable Indian athletes, including long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, and steeplechaser Avinash Sable, are also expected to compete at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest.

Who will be missing the mega event?

However, the Indian contingent will be without some of its biggest stars at the World Athletics Championships 2023. Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the Asian shot put champion, and Tejaswin Shankar, the Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medallist in high jump, have decided not to participate. Toor’s absence comes after a groin injury during the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, where he won the gold medal. This injury marks his second consecutive withdrawal from the World Championships due to a similar injury. Toor had previously set an Asian record throw of 21.77m, qualifying for the world event.

Other athletes, such as Priyanka Goswami, KM Chanda, and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav, have also opted out of the Budapest 2023 competition. Goswami and Chanda’s decision was owing to preparations for the Asian Games 2022, while Yadav suffered an elbow injury last month, ruling him out of the competition.

What Tejaswin Shankar had to say regarding opting out

Tejaswin Shankar, on the other hand, has chosen to focus on the upcoming Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China. In a candid statement, he explained his decision to ESPN: “You have to be honest with yourself and I am very honest and clear about my chances. My outdoor season’s best this year is 2.21m, so how can I expect to jump 2.30m at the Worlds? When I haven’t practiced enough, how can I expect to perform there?

“I see no point in going to the World Championships and jumping 2.16 or 2.20m and coming back empty-handed. I would rather prepare for the Asian Games because I have a realistic chance of a medal there, ” he added. Tejaswin Shankar, India’s national record holder in high jump, qualified for the men’s high jump event for the World Athletics Championships through world rankings.
