He also captured gold and silver medals in the 4 X 100 m relay at these championships respectively. His personal best times for the 100 and 200 meters are 9.86 and 19.31 seconds, respectively. Out of which, the 200 meter record is also an American record, making him the third-fastest man in history in that particular event.

Junior Career

Lyles competed for the United States and took home a gold medal in the 200 m at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Lyles cleared 2.03 meters in the high jump as a high school junior in January 2015. Track & Field News named him the 2015 high school boys athlete of the year in November. Lyles claimed the 200 m at the New Balance Nationals Indoor in March 2016. At the USA Junior Championships in June 2016, Lyles won the 100-meter race in 10.08 seconds.

Lyles participated in the 100-meter and 200-meter races at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in order to qualify for the Olympic team. In the 200 m, he won his semi-final and finished fourth in the final with a time of 20.09 seconds, shattering a national high school record that had stood for 31 years. Although he didn’t qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics, he qualified for the 2016 World U20 Championships, where he won two gold medals by winning the 100 m and 4 x 100 m relay events.

Senior Career

Lyles had intended to play for the University of Florida’s Florida Gators, but in July 2016, Noah and his younger brother Josephus turned professional and inked with adidas. Lyles began 2017 with winning his first senior national title in the 300 m at the 2017 USA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, lowering the indoor world record by one hundredth of a second to 31.87 seconds. At the 2017 World Relays, he and the team USA won a silver medal in the 4 x 200-meter relay. Ahead of the American champion Ameer Webb and the world champion Ramil Guliyev, Lyles won the final of two IAAF Diamond League meets in 2017.

In his debut 200-meter race, he ran a 19.72, equaling Mennea’s long-standing 1979 world record mark during the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala meet.  He lowered his personal best to 19.50 a month later in Lausanne, moving up to number four on the all-time list. Due to his 2019 schedule’s expanded hours, he competed at the US National Championships at the end of July and won the 200-meter race in 19.78 seconds. He achieved a 19.65 (+0.2) in Paris. At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, he won gold medals in the 200 m and the 4 x 100 m relay.

On August 21, in Eugene, Oregon, he followed up this Olympic performance with a 19.52 (+1.5). Lyles captured his second world title in the 200 m on July 21, 2022, at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. He ran 19.31 to break Michael Johnson’s long-standing record of 19.32, moving him to third on the all-time list. He won the 200 m race to cap off a strong season, earning his fifth overall and fourth over this particular distance in the Zurich Diamond League final.
