Kenya’s Amos Kipruto made a dramatic breakthrough with two miles to go to win the men’s title at the TCS London Marathon on October 2, Sunday. Yalemzerf Yehualaw, who was competing in just her second marathon of her career, overcame a significant fall to win the women’s title at the World Athletics Elite Platinum road race. Yehualaw finished first in 2:17:26, which is the third-fastest time ever recorded on London’s streets, while Kipruto crossed the finish line in 2:04:39 owing to his finishing sprint.

The front pack of eight ladies, including Yehualaw and defending champion Joyciline Jepkosgei, covered the first 5km in 16:01 and the 10km in 32:18. The early pace predicted a 2:16:15 finish, far under the women’s-only world record of 2:17:01. However, the pace gradually slowed. Through 15km (48:51) and halfway, which was achieved in 1:08:46, the same eight women remained together. By 25km (1:21:29), the group had been reduced to seven women, with the pacemakers having dropped out. Melly and Ashete Bekere were the next to fall off the pace, followed by Kebede, leaving only four women in the lead pack – Jepkosgei, Judith Jeptum, Alemu Megertu, and Yehualaw. In 1:54:30, they completed the first 35 kilometers, exceeding their original prediction of 2:18:00. Yehualaw continued to run for another two hours before picking up the pace. She kept moving to pull ahead in the closing stages, winning by 41 seconds in 2:17:2.

Kenenisa Bekele was prominent in the front pack, but defending champion Sisay Lemma remained near the back of the race. Bashir Abdi, a world and Olympic bronze medalist, and Amos Kipruto of Kenya were also in the hunt. They completed 25 kilometers in 1:13:41, maintaining their pace to finish just after 2:04. Bekele began to lag behind the lead pack’s pace at around 33 kilometers, but he continued to run and maintained them in sight. About fifteen minutes later, Kipruto raced away from the rest of the group, establishing a sizable lead. A 4:21 time for the 25th mile proved decisive which eventually helped him to clinch the title.
