The world of professional wrestling is no stranger to ebbs and flows in viewership and the latest episode of “WWE SmackDown” has encountered a dip in overall viewership raising questions about the factors contributing to this decline. With the absence of key figures like Roman Reigns and Jey Uso coupled with increased competition, “SmackDown” experienced a notable drop in both overall viewership and the coveted P18-49 demographic.

According to reports from Wrestlenomics, “SmackDown” witnessed a 14 percent decrease in its overall viewership averaging 2,094,000 viewers in total. Notably, the P18-49 demographic a critical segment for advertisers saw an 18 percent decline. This dip represents the lowest 18-49 viewership since May 26 and the lowest overall viewership since August 18. It’s worth noting that this decline comes on the heels of a drop in viewership for the previous week’s show which served as the go-home episode for Payback.

Despite the decrease in viewership, “SmackDown” managed to maintain its status as the top program in the P18-49 demographic on Friday night surpassing other sports offerings. This resilience in a competitive landscape is a testament to WWE’s enduring popularity.

Examining the episode’s viewership patterns, the beginning of the program emerged as the most-watched segment. However, a significant peak in the P18-49 demographic was recorded towards the end of the show coinciding with the conclusion of the main event match between A.J. Styles and Jimmy Uso. The unexpected post-match attack by Solo Sikoa on A.J. Styles a former WWE Champion likely contributed to this spike in interest.

Other notable moments from the episode included a clash between L.A. Knight and former United States Champion Austin Theory. Despite Grayson Waller’s presence in Theory’s corner, Knight secured the victory demonstrating his prowess in the ring. Additionally, the popular faction known as The Judgment Day was in action with WWE Undisputed Tag Team Champions Finn Balor and Damian Priest securing a victory over Butch and Ridge Holland of The Brawling Brutes.

This recent decline in “SmackDown” viewership also coincided with a minor viewership bump for “AEW Dynamite” following the All Out pay-per-view event. Meanwhile, “WWE Raw” ratings remained relatively stable, even experiencing a minor two-percent increase following Payback.

The absence of Roman Reigns, the reigning Universal Champion and a pivotal figure in WWE’s current landscape undoubtedly played a role in the viewership decline. Reigns’ character evolution and dominance have been central to “SmackDown” storylines, making his presence a significant draw for fans. Similarly, Jey Uso has been an integral part of The Bloodline faction alongside Reigns was also notably absent.

Wrestling promotions often navigate changes in roster availability. The impact of such absences on viewership underscores the importance of maintaining a compelling and diverse cast of characters to engage the audience consistently.
