In a departure from its historical approach, WWE’s Raw made a significant acknowledgment of wrestling legend Sting during its recent broadcast. The move marks a departure from the company’s previous reluctance to reference talent not currently signed with them, especially those associated with rival promotions like AEW.

During the Raw episode, commentators Michael Cole and Pat McAfee took a moment to extend congratulations to “the great Sting” while Gunther and Dominik Mysterio faced off in the ring. McAfee even went on to mention the “absolutely epic match” from AEW Revolution, where Sting and Darby Allin triumphed over the Young Bucks to retain the AEW Tag Team Titles.

Triple H honors Sting

This shift in approach reflects a changing mindset within WWE under the stewardship of Paul Levesque and Nick Khan, diverging from the practices of the past under Vince McMahon’s leadership. Historically, WWE went out of its way to avoid mentioning talents not under their banner, but recent instances suggest a move towards a more inclusive and respectful approach.

One such instance occurred at WWE Elimination Chamber, where Michael Cole casually referenced AEW’s Chris Jericho during the broadcast, a gesture that would have been unthinkable in the past.

By acknowledging Sting’s retirement, WWE not only paid tribute to a trailblazer and icon of the industry but also demonstrated a willingness to recognize the contributions of talent beyond its own roster. This shift in attitude reflects a broader evolution within the wrestling landscape and highlights WWE’s commitment to honoring the legacies of those who have left an indelible mark on the sport.
