Franklin Roberto Lashley (born July 16, 1976, Junction City, Kansas, United States) is an American professional wrestler and mixed martial artist better known by his in-ring name Bobby Lashley. He is currently signed with WWE, where he performs on the Raw brand. He is an eight-time world champion, having been a two-time WWE Champion, two-time ECW World Champion, and four-time Impact World Heavyweight Champion. Lashley is also known for his MMA career in Bellator and Strikeforce.

Lashley is of Panamanian descent and was born to the son of a U.S. Army drill sergeant. He grew up in a single-parent household and his mother barely spoke English and struggled to secure a good job. He has three older sisters. He was introduced to wrestling when his father was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas. He later graduated from Junction City High School, where he continued to wrestle. He attended Missouri Valley College, where he was the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Wrestling Champion in the 177 lbs category in 1996, 1997, and 1998, and graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in human-service agency management and recreation administration. 

He followed his father into the United States Army after college and continued to compete in amateur wrestling in the army’s World Class Athlete Program. During three years in the Army, he won a gold and silver medal in the International Military Sports Council senior freestyle wrestling event.

Lashley is the only wrestler after Rob Van Dam to have won the WWE, ECW, and TNA/Impact world championships and has headlined multiple pay-per-view events for WWE and TNA/Impact, including the 2016 edition of the latter’s show, Bound for Glory.

Bobby Lashey in WWE

Lashley made his WWE debut in 2005 when he appeared on SmackDown and became a one-time United States Champion. He was later drafted to ECW where he became a two-time ECW World Champion and in the process became the first African-American to hold the championship.

During this time, he was involved in a feud between Vince McMahon and Donald Trump known as the “Battle of the Billionaires” at WrestleMania 23. He left the company thereafter and pursued a career in MMA and had his first professional fight in December 2008. After amassing a career record of 10–2, he signed with Bellator MMA in 2014 where he won all five of his career bouts from 2014 to 2016.

After leaving IMPACT Wrestling. Bobby Lashley returned. Lashley returned to RAW after WrestleMania 34 and assaulted Elias. He defeated Roman Reigns at Extreme Rules. Lashley fought with Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and Elias throughout the year. Lashley was managed by Lio Rush, and he won the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Dean Ambrose. Lashley was defeated by Finn Balor in the Elimination Chamber.

Fling with Lana

Lashley lost the championship to Demon Balor at WrestleMania 35. Lashley spent the months after Mania battling with Braun Strowman and ultimately losing. Lashley returned in September and began clashing with Rusev, with Lana on his side. The conflict continued for several months, during which Lana and Lashley became into a relationship, married on-screen, and beat Rusev and Liv Morgan.

Aleister Black beat Lashley in WrestleMania 36. After Mania, Lashley left Lana and formed The Hurt Business with MVP. By beating Apollo Crews, Lashley earned his second US Championship. Lashley beat Sami Zayn in Survivor Series. Lashley was defeated by Riddle in the Elimination Chamber. Later, after his match, he assaulted Drew McIntyre.

Lashley lost the WWE Championship in a fatal five-way match in 2022. Lashley defeated Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble to earn his second WWE Championship. Lashley was knocked out during the bout at Elimination Chamber and was unable to compete. Initially, Lashley was hurt at the Royal Rumble. At WrestleMania 38, Lashley defeated Omos.

The same night, his previous manager MVP turned on him and joined Omos. This resulted in a series of contests between the two. Lashley beat both Omos and MVP at Hell In A Cell and then challenged Theory. At Money in the Bank 2022, he beat Theory for the US Championship. Lashley was set to defend his championship against Theory in a rematch at SummerSlam 2022.

Third African American WWE Champion

Lashley beat The Miz on RAW to win the WWE Champion. Lashley is the company’s third African American WWE Champion. Lashley defended his championship against Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 37. Lashley lost the title to Big E after 195 days. Lashley met Goldberg at Crown Jewel and lost.

Lashley beat Theory to capture his third US Championship. SummerSlam included a championship rematch, which Lashley won again. Lashley successfully defended the belt against Tommaso Ciampa, AJ Styles, The Miz in a Steel Cage match, and Seth “Freakin” Rollins in the weeks that followed.

Lashley lost the United States Championship to Rollins in a rematch on the October 10 episode of Raw after being assaulted by a returning Brock Lesnar before the match, ending his third reign at 100 days. Lashley lost against Lesnar at Crown Jewel on November 5 after controlling the bulk of the bout; afterward, Lashley savagely assaulted Lesnar.

On November 26, Lashley failed to reclaim the United States Championship from Rollins in a triple-threat match, which was won by Theory. Lashley got another championship opportunity against Theory on January 23, 2023, but failed to reclaim the title in a No Disqualification match due to interference from the returning Brock Lesnar. On January 28, Lashley entered the Royal Rumble battle as number 13, defeating Lesnar before being eliminated by Seth “Freakin” Rollins. On February 18, Lashley defeated Lesnar by disqualification when Lesnar delivered a low blow to Lashley. Lashley won the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on the March 31 edition of SmackDown.
