In order to find a new opponent for his United States championship, Austin Theory organized an invitational. It consisted of two Fatal 4-Way bouts, with the victors moving on to face each other in a singles battle to determine the next top challenger. Grayson Waller, AJ Styles, and BUTCH were first defeated by Santos Escobar. Then, Cameron Grimes, Sheamus, and LA Knight were defeated by Rey Mysterio.

The two LWO members were therefore set up for a confrontation on this week’s Friday Night SmackDown in New Orleans. They handled it honestly, portraying themselves as respectful rivals engaged in a straightforward struggle for a common objective. As they became more violent and even, at one point, directly slapped one other in the face, things were a little heated.
