It’s sometimes preferable to simply ignore the filth sheets and let events unfold on screen. Despite rumors that Lesnar was meant to pin Cody Rhodes at Backlash, Fightful Select confirmed that everything went according to schedule. Rhodes won the match with a roll-up. There was no “conclusive” winner, therefore this conflict is very unlikely to be over. It would seem obvious for Lesnar to interfere with Rhodes’ attempt to win the recently established world heavyweight championship, which led to a rematch at Night of Champions.

Lesnar typically works WWE’s biggest tentpole events, and there isn’t enough time to develop a compelling rivalry for the match with anybody aside from Rhodes. The possibility of a rubber battle at a PLE later this summer would be created by introducing Lesnar vs. Rhodes 2 to the equation and positioning them close to the top of the marquee.

Lesnar’s comeback

Although The American Nightmare had to utilize his damaged arm, Rhodes hit two Cross Rhodes. Rhodes was in evident pain when Lesnar used the Kimura Lock to stop a third Cross Rhodes. Rhodes executed a third Cross Rhodes after Lesnar’s botched F-5 attempt, but The Beast jumped out at two. The Beast then managed to hit the F-5, which Rhodes escaped by leaping out within the three-count. The American Nightmare then repeatedly struck Lesnar’s face with the cast.
