The 2023 Men’s European Volleyball Championship will be the 33rd edition of the Men’s European Volleyball Championship, organised by Europe’s governing volleyball body, CEV. For the third time, the EuroVolley will be held in four countries: Italy, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Israel. The top three teams of the tournament qualified for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship as the CEV representative. The only exception was Italy who had already qualified as the current World champion.
Saturday will see Turkey take on Greece in the preliminary round of the CEV Men’s European Volleyball 2023. Heading into Saturday’s match, Turkey will square off against Greece in Israel. In the world rankings, Turkey is placed in the twelfth position. On the other hand, Greece lies at a much lower position in the thirty-fifth position. Heading into Saturday’s match Turkey is coming with a disappointing defeat in a nail-biter match against Romania (2-3). On the other hand, Greece is also coming with a defeat in a nail-biter match against Israel (2-3). Both teams have shown tremendous fighting spirit in their recent matches. Naturally, the fortunes for either of the two might change this time around. Let us see who has the final laugh on Saturday.
The drawing of lots was combined with a seeding of National Federations and performed. The four organizers of the tournament were seeded in the Preliminary pools. However, the finalists from the previous edition were drawn into different Preliminary pools. This ensured that the top teams would be separated from competing in the same groups. The organizers could select one team to join their pools. On the other hand, the 16 remaining teams were seeded in descending order in the number of cups which equals the number of Preliminary pools. The pointing system of the Men’s Euro Volleyball 2023 is a little different. For a 3-0 or 3-1 win the winner gets 3 points while the loser gets 0 points. However, in case of a 3-2 win, the winner will get 2 points while the loser will get 1 point. This has ensured an equitable distribution of points.
