Co-hosts Slovenia will take on Germany in the opening round-of-16 clash of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2022. The Saturday night clash will see two teams from the same group going head to head. Earlier in this tournament, Slovenia had comfortably gotten past their upcoming European opponent. Hence, Germany have to be at the top of their game to produce an upset win on Saturday, however, they know the difficult task that lies in front of them. Slovenia have been impressive right throughout the group stage of the World Championship that will take place from 26th August to 11th September. Poland is also hosting the competition along with Slovenia.
In Pool D, Slovenia won two of their three games. They overcame Cameroon and Germany by comfortable 3-0 margins, while their only defeat was a close one against table toppers France (2-3). Meanwhile, Germany lost to both Slovenia and France and tasted victory only against the African country. At the end of the group stage, France topped Pool D with eight points, Slovenia with seven and Germany with three. Cameroon did not register a single point to their name.

The 24-team competition will take place from August 26th to September 11th. All of the teams are divided into six groups with each pool consisting of four teams. The group phase will last for six days, with each team playing once against their pool opponents. Following the completion of the schedule, 16 teams will be ascertained. It will have all six pool winners, runners-up, and the best four third-placed teams. They will proceed to the first round of elimination.
