The 2023 Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship will be the 22nd staging of the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship.
The 2023 Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship will be the 22nd staging of the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship. The Championship is a biennial international volleyball tournament organised by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC). This time the AVC is collaborating with the Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation (IRIVF) to organise the tournament. The tournament will be held in Urmia. The current champion of the tournament is Iran (4th title). However, the most successful nation is Japan which has won 9 titles in the tournament.
Saturday will see Japan take on Thailand in the preliminary round of the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship 2023. Japan is currently ranked fifth in the World Rankings. In contrast, China is ranked sixtieth in the World Rankings. The Japanese had a successful VNL campaign. However, they were eventually defeated by Poland who became eventual champions. Nevertheless, the Japanese will put that aside and focus on the Asian Championship for now. On the other hand, Thailand has had a dismal run of form in recent games. Going by the talent that Japan has, it will be very easy for the Asian powerhouses to dismantle the Thais. Let us see who has the last laugh.
According to the AVC regulations, a maximum of 16 teams will be participating in the tournament. This is based on 1 host team, followed by 10 teams based on the final standing of the previous edition. Added to that, there will be 5 teams from each of the 5 zones. The AVC stated that there were originally eighteen entrant teams that were due to participate in the tournament. However, on 17 August 2023, Mongolia announced that it withdrew from the tournament.
Teams were seeded in the first two positions of each pool following the serpentine system according to their final standing of the 2021 edition. AVC reserved the right to seed the hosts as head of Pool A regardless of the final standing of the 2021 edition. All teams not seeded were drawn in Bangkok, Thailand on 16 March 2023. Out of this system, 6 pools of 3 teams each have been made.
