The 2023 Men's European Volleyball Championship will be the 33rd edition of the Men's European Volleyball Championship, organised by CEV.
The 2023 Men’s European Volleyball Championship will be the 33rd edition of the Men’s European Volleyball Championship, organised by Europe’s governing volleyball body, CEV. For the third time, the EuroVolley will be held in four countries: Italy, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Israel. The top three teams of the tournament qualified for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship as the CEV representative. The only exception was Italy who had already qualified as the current World champion.
Sunday will see Greece take on Romania in the preliminary round of the CEV Men’s European Volleyball 2023. In the world rankings, Greece is placed in the thirty-fourth position. On the other hand, Romania is placed in the thirty-fifth position. Heading into Sunday’s match Romania had to toil very hard to secure a win against Turkey (3-2). Likewise, Greece also gave a resolute performance to secure the win against Portugal (3-2). The Greeks and Romanians have been very resolute in their previous matches thereby giving no space of error against their opposition. Naturally, Sunday’s match is also expected to go down the wire.
The drawing of lots was combined with a seeding of National Federations and performed. The four organizers of the tournament were seeded in the Preliminary pools. However, the finalists from the previous edition were drawn into different Preliminary pools. This ensured that the top teams would be separated from competing in the same groups. The organizers could select one team to join their pools. On the other hand, the 16 remaining teams were seeded in descending order in the number of cups which equals the number of Preliminary pools. The pointing system of the Men’s Euro Volleyball 2023 is a little different. For a 3-0 or 3-1 win the winner gets 3 points while the loser gets 0 points. However, in case of a 3-2 win, the winner will get 2 points while the loser will get 1 point. This has ensured an equitable distribution of points.
