Canada will be playing Cyprus in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Beach Volleyball in the Commonwealth Games. The Canadian men are the defending silver medallists after losing to Australia in Gold Coast four years ago. They have been highly impressive in this competition, producing noteworthy results till now. Having won all three games in group phase, Canada will be a medal favourite yet again this year. Hence, it will be an extremely difficult task for Cyprus to pull out an upset win on Friday night. Besides, hosts England will take on Gambia in another quarterfinal.
After starting with a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka, Canada never looked back in the group phase. They defeated St Kitts & Nevis in their next match by the same margin before getting past Gambia 2-1. Meanwhile, Cyprus started with two defeats against New Zealand and England – both by the same 2-0 margin. Then they defeated Tuvalu 2-0 in their final group game on Wednesday. In the upcoming quarter-final clash, Canada will undoubtedly be the favourites. However, Cyprus will be riding high on confidence after registering their first victory of the Commonwealth Games in their last match.
