The fifth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League began its action yesterday. The Nations League is a yearly competition for international volleyball players. From May 30 to July 16, 2023, the tournament will take place. The decisive round will take held in Arlington, Texas, in the United States, at College Park Centre. Four volleyball confederations’ top 16 nations will compete in the Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL). It is one of the top international indoor competitions put on by the FIVB, the organisation that governs the sport. There were some minor changes post which the final roster for the tournament was made. The changes were the results of the 2022 Nations League and 2022 Challenger Cup. Australia was replaced by debutants Cuba in this edition.
Thursday will see Brazil lock horns against the Netherlands. Brazil is currently ranked at the third place while the Netherlands is at twelfth place. Brazil and Netherlands last met in the FIVB Nations League where the Dutch side was handed out a defeat at the hands of the Brazilians. Brazil won the last encounter in 3 straight sets. The Dutch side will look to put aside their last result and look to start the campaign with a win. Brazil on the other hand will look to improve their performances and reach the finals in the USA.
Three weekly stages make up the preliminary round of the VNL 2023 women’s competition. Each week, the teams in the two pools are switched around to include all 16 teams. The top eight teams in the standings after three weeks will move on to the championship round. Each team competes in 12 games during the pool round. The last knockout round of the competition will thereafter feature eight teams. After the preliminary round is over, the teams’ rankings will be used to decide the order of the knockout stages. The preliminary stages will be conducted in the following places: Antalya, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Brasilia, Suwon and Bangkok. Preliminary rounds will continue up to the 2nd of July post which the knockout matches will begin.

Tuesday featured four games of Germany and Netherlands, Japan and the Dominican Republic, Italy and Thailand and Poland and Canada going head to head against each other in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League Round 1. The Germans came out on top at the back of a dominant performance. Germany won against the Dutch side in a dominant game with a scoreline of 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22 (3-1). The Dutch tried to make a comeback after the third set however the German blitzkrieg was too hot to handle for the Dutch side. In the second game, the dominant Japanese side thrashed the Dominican side to take the game 3-1. The Japanese team won with a scoreline of 25-23, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-15. The defending champions won against the Thai side with a scoreline of 24-26, 25-17,27-29, 30-28 and 15-11 to take the set 3-2. Likewise, the final match of the day saw the Polish side battle it out against the Canadians. The scoreline was 20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23 and 15-13.
The 2023 Volleyball Women’s Nations League will commence on May 30 and end on July 16.
