Brazil will be taking on Japan in the opening quarterfinal of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League on Wednesday. Both teams are heading into this clash on the back of contrasting ends to the season. Brazil enjoyed a fine run of victories to close the round one encounters, while Japan completely lost their way. As per form and their positions in the table, Brazil should be the favourites, however, Japan have shown immense promise at the beginning of the tournament, proving why they cannot be taken lightly.

The South American country finished second, with 29 points from 12 games, with ten victories and two defeats. On the other hand, Japan ended in the fifth spot, having got 25 points from the same number of matches after winning eight and losing the remaining four games. The current form is in the favour of Brazil, who won their last five games on the bounce. Meanwhile, Japan suffered a massive collapse during the closing stages of round one and lost their last four encounters.

What is the format of 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League?

In the preliminary round, 16 women’s teams will compete in pools of 8 teams under the revised format. During the pool stage, each team plays 12 matches. Eight teams will then advance to the competition’s final knockout round. The Finals will include the seven strongest teams, with the finals host – Turkey – entering the knockout round as the top-placed team. It will consist of eight matches in total – four quarterfinals, two semi-finals, and bronze and gold medal matches.
