The Las Vegas-based promotion’s UFC 274 event was a huge success. Charles Oliveira was defending his lightweight championship against Justin Gaethje, and the program was meant to have two belts on the line. Meanwhile, Rose Namajunas was defending her strawweight championship against Carla Esparza, and Michael Chandler was facing Tony Ferguson. Even though Oliveira missed weight and was stripped of his championship, UFC 274 had the highest number of buys of the year in the United States, at over 400,000. According to the Sports Business Journal, this is the case.

Most PPV’s Buys

UFC 274 had the highest pay-per-view buys, which is surprising since UFC 270 featured Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane for the heavyweight championship. Meanwhile, UFC 271 had Israel Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker 2, UFC 272 featured Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal, and UFC 273 included two belts and Khamat Chimaev, but it looks like the focus was on UFC 274.

Dana White after UFC 274 on Oliveira

Charles Oliveira defeated Justin Gaethje in the first round in the main event of UFC 274, however, the championship is now vacated. Oliveira will, however, be one-half of the vacant championship bout, according to Dana White. As no contender is decided who would go up against Oliveira for The UFC Lightweight Championship.

Dana White after UFC 274 said, “He’s the guy. He didn’t make weight. We have rules, he didn’t make the weight, the belt is vacant. But I’m sure in the minds of the media and fight fans, Oliveira’s the champion. But technically, he’s the No. 1 contender now.”

Carla Esparza won a split decision against Namajunas to recover the strawweight championship in a poor fight at the event. Michael Chandler also defeated Tony Ferguson in a highlight-reel KO. The other two bouts on the main program saw Ovince Saint Preux defeat Shogun Rua by split decision and Randy Brown defeat Khaos Williams by split decision.
