Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson has made the difficult decision to withdraw from his scheduled bout at UFC 291 after his opponent
In a surprising turn of events, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has made the difficult decision to withdraw from his scheduled bout at UFC 291 after his opponent, Michel Pereira, missed weight. The welterweight matchup was eagerly anticipated by fans but unfortunately, the fight will not be going forward as planned.
During the official weigh-ins, Pereira tipped the scale at 174 pounds well above the welterweight limit. In contrast, Thompson successfully made weight at 170.5 pounds. Despite rumors suggesting negotiations could potentially salvage the fight. It was officially announced just minutes before the ceremonial weigh-ins that the bout was off.
Soon after the announcement, Stephen Thompson took to Instagram to explain the reasoning behind his decision not to accept the fight against Pereira. In his heartfelt post, Thompson expressed his regret to the fans who were looking forward to the matchup and conveyed his disappointment for his coaches, family, and all those who had supported him throughout his training camp.
Thompson is a veteran in the UFC with over 11 years of experience. Highlighted that this was not the first time he had faced an opponent who missed weight. Drawing from past experiences, Thompson and his team concluded that it would not be wise to proceed with the fight. The potential disadvantages of facing a heavier opponent could have significant consequences for his health and career.
The 38-year-old fighter stated that he was not in the UFC to be a gatekeeper. But to compete for and win the UFC Welterweight Title. Thompson emphasized the seriousness of the sport where fighters put their health and careers on the line each time they step into the Octagon. He pointed out that a loss by decision to an opponent with a weight advantage similar to his fight with Darren Till could hinder his title aspirations.
Expressing his concern over the lack of consequences for fighters who miss weight. Thompson hoped that his decision not to proceed with the fight would discourage others from doing the same in the future. He urged fighters who find themselves in a similar situation to stand firm and not allow such mismatches to happen.
Thompson reassured his fans that he is healthy and eager to get back into the Octagon as soon as possible. However, he made it clear that he wants to compete on a level playing field as he continues his quest for the UFC Welterweight Title.
