Dustin Poirier has been dying to return to the Octagon after his loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 last year. The UFC appeared ready to offer him a fight on several occasions, but for whatever reason, ‘The Diamond’ has yet to return to the cage after a six-month wait. After two consecutive wins against Conor McGregor, the former interim lightweight champion understands what he delivers to the side in terms of star power, and you’d have to believe he’ll be divided between huge paydays and seeking the championship once more.

Of course, he has ample time on his hands to accomplish both, which is presumably one of the reasons he’s been so eager about taking on Nate Diaz. These two adversaries have made no secret of their dislike for one another, and yet, years after they first met, we’re still waiting to see them face off. Diaz has one fight left on his current UFC contract, and if Poirier is the man who can help him finish it off, he intends to do so in style.

Poirier was reacting to a fan who believes Diaz would end him before the final rounds even begin.

Dustin Poirier vs Nate Diaz is long due

Whereas countless fans will only recall their incessant back-and-forth in recent months, it’s worth noting that this partnership was initially announced in late 2018. Poirier and Diaz were supposed to fight as one of the main events on the ill-fated UFC 230 show at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, Poirier was forced to withdraw due to an injury, which the Stockton king has long held against the Louisiana native. In any case, it would be a pity if we never got to see these two Hall of Fame prospects face battle.
