Jannik Sinner didn’t take it easy at the US Open on Tuesday. The 11th seed had to work overtime to defeat the tenacious Daniel Altmaier in a five-set battle in the first round of the New York hard-court Grand Slam. The Italian defeated the World No. 93 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the pair’s first ATP Head2Head clash. Sinner appeared to have gained control of the three-hour, 35-minute match after easing to the second and third sets with some typically aggressive baseline hitting, but tournament debutant Altmaier had a fourth-set comeback to push Sinner the distance.
“It’s very tough, obviously, playing the first round in every tournament, and especially here where I think I can play well,” said Sinner in his on-court interview. “I had moments where I played well and I had moments where I could play better, but [in the] first round it’s obviously a very tough one.” The Italian will now face home favourite Christopher Eubanks in the second round.
Jannik Sinner and Christopher Eubanks are scheduled to face each other on Thursday, September 1 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
