Rublev was pushed to the limit by Laslo Djere in the first round but the Russian edged out a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
After a tough but succesful outing in the first round of the 2022 US Open, Andrey Rublev is set to face South Korea’s Soon-woo Kwon in the second round. Rublev was pushed to the limit by Laslo Djere in the first round but the Russian edged out a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4 victory against the Serbian. Rublev smashed 13 aces in the match, three less than his opponent, and converted as many break points as Djere with seven. The Russian recorded win percentages of 76% and 52% on the first and second serves respectively and also managed to win a total of 18 service games.
South Korea’s Soon-woo Kwon was up against Fernando Verdasco in the first round of the 2022 US Open. Kwon won the match 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3 to punch his ticket to the second round. The South Korean hit nine aces and converted six out of 13 break points whereas his opponent could only make good on one out of six.
Andrey Rublev and Soon-woo Kwon are scheduled to face each other on Thursday, September 1 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
