Iga Swiatek vs Karolina Muchova will take place in the second final of The French Open 2023 on June 10.
In the semifinals, Iga Swiatek was tested the most when she faced Beatriz Haddad Maia. She trailed by a break in both sets, but saved three breakpoints at 4-4 in the second, rallied from 3-5 in the tiebreak, and saved a set point to win 6-2, 7-6 in well over two hours. Her tiebreak record in 2023 is now 3-2. In contrast, none of the competitors in the previous rounds were able to force the top seed to last even 90 minutes. She won 6-4, 6-0 over Cristina Bucsa and Claire Liu, 6-0, 6-0 over Wang Xinyu in 51 minutes, 6-0, 6-0 over Lesia Tsurenko, and 6-4, 6-2 over Coco Gauff in last year’s final rematch.
Karolina Muchova had never advanced past the first round of Roland-Garros. She just defeated the season’s best player to reach her first grand slam final. Despite some late cramping, she defeated Aryna Sabalenka, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, after rallying from 2-5 in the third set and saving a match point. Her win over the world No. 2 and Australian Open champion brings her career record against top three players to 5-0, with two of those victories coming in Paris (Maria Sakkari, 2022). It’s a surreal moment for a player who had to be rolled off the court in a wheelchair a year ago due to an ankle injury at this very tournament.
