Daniil Medvedev has continually ranked as one of the world’s leading tennis players for many years now. He is currently the world’s number three-ranked player, and he will surely win many major titles in the future, especially with current greats Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, surely not being too far from retirement.

The US Open hosted Medvedev’s crowning moment

The Russian is one of a rare crop of players who have managed to get the better of the big four in the grand slam events of recent years after he won the US Open in 2021.

The American venue remains the only location where he won at a grand slam event. He is again a strong competitor to potentially win another US grand slam in the 2023 men’s singles event. In the odds to win US Open tennis, Medvedev is seen as one of the genuine competitors offered at 10/1 to claim victory in North America.

Novak Djokovic is undoubtedly the favourite, however. He is looking to secure a third grand slam victory of the year and is playing some of the strongest tennis of his career to date. In tennis betting tips and predictions, he is expected to secure victory on American soil.

There is precedent for Medvedev getting the better of Djokovic in the US Open from the Russian’s victory in 2021. The Serbian provided the opposition for Medvedev in his victorious final appearance of that year.

The win which represented the peak of the Russian’s achievements so far could perhaps provide the perfect omen for him to again stun Djokovic at this year’s event. The Russian’s sole grand slam victory came at the expense of the Serbian, and at the same venue this year, he will certainly fancy repeating that feat.

Medvedev has had a remarkable rise regardless of what he achieves next, but how did he become one of the world’s leading players?

Medvedev’s journey to becoming one of the world’s best

Medvedev began his professional career in 2015, and his ATP tour singles win came in the following year. He defeated Argentine Horacio Zeballos in straight sets in the 2016 Ricoh Open. This helped him to rise into the top 100 for the first time.

He first made a name for himself worldwide in 2017 when he secured his first-ever grand slam match victory against Stan Wawrinka, who was ranked world number three at the time. The win helped him to make a huge jump into the top 50 in the rankings following the tournament.

In 2018 Medvedev’s year started perfectly with a tournament win in the Sydney Invitational and was followed up by a triumph in the Winston-Salem Open.

Medvedev went on to achieve the biggest title of his career so far later that year in the Japan Open – this was his first ATP 500 title. A run to the semi-finals at the Swiss Indoors event where he was only stopped by Roger Federer allowed him to move into the top 20.

The final year of the decade saw Medvedev win two masters and reach a grand slam final. The Russian won the Cincinnati and Shanghai Masters and reached the US Open final where he lost to Nick Kyrgios. He broke the top 10 that year and had genuinely established himself as an elite player.

At that point, Medvedev was certainly one of the world’s best players, and he has gone on since to reach a further three Grand Slam finals. In 2022, he even spent some time at the peak of the world rankings, above his rival Djokovic.

Medvedev has built huge foundations in tennis and even enjoyed great success already. But perhaps the best is yet to come for the former US Open champion.
