Ons Jabeur vs Paula Badosa will take place in the round of 64 of the 2023 Italian Open on May 12.
Due to a left calf injury, Ons Jabeur had to retire in the semifinals of Stuttgart and withdrew from her title defence in Madrid entirely. This is the second time she has had physical problems this season. The world No. 7 had minor knee surgery in February and was forced to miss the entire Middle East season. In an otherwise bleak season, the 2022 Wimbledon and US Open finalist has found reasons to rejoice, winning her fourth career title in Charleston without dropping a set. She has her work cut out for her this fortnight as she attempts to defend her run to the Rome final last year at the expense of Daria Kasatkina and Maria Sakkari.
After being pushed past midnight by world No. 88 Anna-Lena Friedsam, Paula Badosa was nearly out of her mind. The Spaniard had to serve twice to stay in the match before defeating the German 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 in two hours and 37 minutes. It’s a shaky start to her second Rome campaign. She competed in this tournament as a top three player last year, defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets before losing to Daria Kasatkina in the next round. In contrast, the 25-year-old is back in the Italian capital ranked outside the top 30, despite her 8-3 record in this clay swing so far.

Paula Badosa is up 3-1. The Spaniard won their most recent and only clay-court match in the 2022 Stuttgart quarterfinals. She is coming off multiple victories in Charleston, Stuttgart, and Madrid, and she will be motivated to compete against good friend Ons Jabeur in a battle of former world No. 2 players.
