Tuesday's first round of the 2022 US Open will pit the 13th-ranked Jannik Sinner against the 93rd-ranked Daniel Altmaier.
Last year, Jannik Sinner won four championships, all of them were played on hard courts. He has yet to claim a victory in one of these competitions this year, but he has shown enough to suggest that he is a force to be reckoned with, particularly if he draws well early on. The world number 13 is 17-5 in contests on hard courts in 2022 after breaking into the top 10 last year. This includes third-round exits in the Canadian Masters and the Cincinnati Masters, which seem a little underwhelming for a player of his calibre. The Italian needs to put up more effort right now after losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati and Pablo Carreno Busta in Montreal. However, given that Sinner has already advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open this year, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him bounce back from his most recent two defeats and play with newfound vigour here.
Altmaier last triumphed in a competitive match in June of this year, when he advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mallorca Open on grass. Daniel Altmaier hasn’t advanced past the first round of any of the seven tournaments that have come after that. Along with that, Altmaier hasn’t advanced past the qualifiers in two of those competitions. Before losing to Soon-woo Kwon in Winston-Salem, Altmaier suffered qualifying losses at the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters. With his recent season-long form, Altmaier might not have made it through the US Open’s three-match qualifying process, but thanks to his ranking, he did so without incident. The problem, though, is that if Altmaier keeps struggling the way he has recently, it might not be long before he has to compete in those qualifiers at major tournaments as well.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniel Altmaier are scheduled to face each other on Tuesday, August 30 in the first round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
