Diego Schwartzman, the 14th seed, will play Alexei Popyrin on Thursday in the second round of the 2022 US Open.
Jack Sock had a strong start to the match before experiencing back pain and finally retiring, which gave Diego Schwartzman the opportunity to move on to the next round. In the gruelling first two sets, both players gave it their best, but Jack Sock prevailed in both to lead the 14th seed by two sets to none. The former World No. 8 began to have back pain in the third set, making it difficult for him to move or strike the ball with much force. After taking a beating in the third set, he eventually retired. Despite being down 3-6, 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 in the match, the World No. 16 advanced to the second round. In the following round, he will have a challenge from a player who is athletic and can hit the ball powerfully. The 30-year-old Argentine is in the second round of the U.S. Open for the sixth time in his ninth participation. He has advanced to the quarterfinals here twice, and he reached the Round of 16 the year before. He was fortunate in the first round, but he intends to improve in the following one.
Although Chun-Hsin Tseng of Taipei was defeated by Alexei Popyrin in straight sets, the result was far from straightforward for the Australian as it took Chun-Hsin Tseng two hours and 42 minutes to overcome him. The 6’5″ Australian defeated World No. 89 Tseng 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 by hitting 15 aces and 46 winners (7-3). Popyrin, ranked 84th in the world, earned the only break of the opening set, but Tseng, who is ranked five spots behind him, put up a lot of strong resistance. The 23-year-old Popyrin entered the match with a 4-14 tour-level record and has struggled mightily at the highest level this year. At a lower level, he did see some success, taking home a Challenger trophy and making it to two semifinals.
Diego Schwartzman and Alexei Popyrin are scheduled to face each other on Thursday, September 1 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
