On Thursday, the fourth-ranked Carlos Alcaraz will play Argentina's Federico Coria in the second round of the 2022 US Open.
Alcaraz wasn’t at his most proficient for a player who entered the match as the 1/50 favourite to win it, but he eventually prevailed without dropping a set. After two hours and 29 minutes of play, Sebastian Baez decided to end the match due to a leg ailment, with the Spaniard leading 7-5, 7-5, 2-0. Carlos Alcaraz, who advanced to the quarterfinals last year, battled to find his rhythm in this round one match and finished with 47 unforced mistakes. In the competition, he faced 10 break-points and was broken twice; as he advances through the rounds, he would aim to change this. Alcaraz had a 2-2 win-loss record at the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters entering the year’s final Grand Slam. Given his recent troubles with his form, would he be able to go deep this time as well?
As far as betting odds go, Federico Coria‘s 25/4 victory in the opening round was perhaps the longest to have succeeded. Coria was an underdog against Tallon Griekspoor since, by nature, he plays on clay courts and had only ever won one Grand Slam match in his career on a surface other than clay. Instead, Coria not only prevailed in the game, but did it in a quick two hours and five minutes, winning 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. Coria took the lead after a late break in the first set, and he overcame a break in the second set’s fifth game to win it in two sets. Griekspoor’s serve was broken along with his resilience, as he was eliminated in three. With nothing to lose and a far tougher task ahead of him than in the first game, Coria might go all out.
Carlos Alcaraz and Federico Coria are scheduled to face each other on Thursday, September 1 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
