Wednesday's second round of the 2022 US Open will feature Casper Ruud, the world's seventh-ranked player, taking the court against Tim van Rijthoven, who is rated 117th.
Kyle Edmund is still in the early stages of his recovery from his past fitness problems. And Ruud used the disparity in lineage and form to his full advantage to defeat his British opponent in straight sets. Casper Ruud beat Edmund 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 after spending two hours and 22 minutes on the court. Ruud broke his opponent six times during the match, so even though he trailed 1-2 when Edmund got the initial hit, he was never truly in jeopardy. At 5-4 in the second set, Ruud had a chance to serve it out, but instead he broke his opponent once again to finish the match. Following that, it was a matter of easing past an exhausted Edmund in the third set.
Van Rijthoven would have been anticipated to perform significantly better than he did in the lead-up to this US Open after shocking the tennis world on grass this season. Since he defeated Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Daniil Medvedev along the way, not many people would have predicted him to win the Rosmalen title. Additionally, a Wimbledon appearance in the fourth round. Van Rijthoven, however, did not compete in any US Open Series events after losing in the opening round of the Newport Open. He only participated in one indoor Challenger tournament on a hard court in Indianapolis in July, where he won a round. He entered this match against Zhizhen Zhang as a second favourite and, for the most part, performed like one as a result. In order to win in two sets, Van Rijthoven had to rally from being down two sets. He did this by saving seven match points. It would definitely continue to rank among the best escapes from this competition.
Casper Ruud and Tim van Rijthoven are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, August 31 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
