Nick Kyrgios and Benjamin Bonzi are scheduled to face each other on Thursday, September 1 in the second round of the 2022 US Open.
In the first round of the tournament, Nick Kyrgios faced his best friend Thanasi Kokkinakis and won in straight sets. It was a tough match, and Kyrgios dominated with over 40 winners and over ten aces. Because of his excellent form leading up to New York, the Australian is widely regarded as a dark horse candidate. It will come down to motivation, as he demonstrated at Wimbledon that he is capable of competing in a grand slam final. The fact that Kyrgios did not face a single break point throughout the match will be difficult to top.
In round one, Benjamin Bonzi faced compatriot Ugo Humbert, who he narrowly defeated in five sets. Humbert arrived in New York in fine form, but lost the first two sets to his compatriot. He fought back to force a decision, but Bonzi escaped. It was a very competitive set, but Bonzi took a lot of chances with his serve. Despite being a very good server, he struggled with his placement throughout the match, resulting in nearly twice as many double faults as aces. That rarely happens, but his in-game positioning was much better. In his 9 ace and 15 double fault efforts, Bonzi had 45 winners and 36 unforced errors.
Nick Kyrgios and Benjamin Bonzi are scheduled to face each other on Thursday, September 1 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
